What are you doing for your own Sawab-e-Jaariyah

Imam Nawwi the noted author of Riyadd us Salhiheen, lived for only 45 years, but the number of books he has written, will take me 45 years to read!

When I stand in the gallery of books watching the great works done by the early generation Muslim scholars I find my own tiny articles shrinking tinier.

Take the example of Imam Bukhari, He took 18 years to compile his Sahih Bukhari , but such is the legacy that he has left behind, that no Madrasa of ahl e sunnah wal jamat can list his Sahih Bukhari out of their syllabus. Imagine, every scholar of the Muslim community quotes Bukhari in his jumuah, khutbas, in his Eid and marriage Khutbas, or be it a session of Fiqh or any thing related to Islam, Bukhari is an essential book of our learning deen. Can you imagine the sawab e jarriya that this man must be receiving in his grave for past 1200 years and still many more to come?

Noted scholar from India, Mukhtar Ahmed Nadwi, who died a few years back, built around 360 Masajids for promoting the movement of the Qur'an and Sunnah, which I think is more than the number of Masajids built by the Moghuls in their tenure of 300 years. I am sad that the Ahlul Hadith or the Salafis of India don’t market his talks. In fact I tried in every corner of Peace TV library to find if there are any of his talks available to air on peace TV, but alas no one has recorded! By the time Peace TV began to be aired, the elderly man was too old and sick to face the lights and the cameras for hours. During my early days in Islamic studies, I had an opportunity to attend a few talks of him and I found them simple appealing and understandable. He served as Mufti e Haram for few years as well.Among the reasons why I regret for not learning Arabic, is that I am not able to read the master piece of Hafiz Ibn Hajar Asqalani ‘Fat’hul Baari’. It is a commentary of Sahih Al Bukhari, explaining in detail every Hadith that Imam Bukhari has narrated in his sahih. Perhaps many of my readers may not be knowing that there are no less than thirty scholars who have tried writing a commentary of Sahih Al Bukhari but without doubt, Fat’hul Baari gets the honor of being the best.

Ibn Taymiyaa, was not only a scholar but also a warrior who actually aroused and lead the Muslims to fight against the mighty Mongols after they devastated Baghdad and killed around fifty thousands of Muslims. Ibn Taymiyaa has the honor of being a teacher of other Titans in Islamic literature world, Ibn Kathir and Ibn Jauzi to name a few.

Every contemporary Tafseer of Qur’an gives a reference of Ibn Kathir. What Fat’hul Baari is to Hadith, Tafseer Ibn Katheer is to the Holy Qur’an. An excellent commentary of the Holy Qur’an! Besides penning the best commentary of the Holy Qur’an, Ibn Katheer also wrote al Bidaya wal Niahaya, in fifteen gigantic volumes on Islamic History.

My friend from Madina’s Islamic university tells me that there has been no Muhaddith of the caliber of Shaikh Nasiruddin Albani in the past three centuries after the death of Imam Suyuti. I wish some publisher translates his work ‘Silsila e ahadeeth sahihya”, a compilation of all Sahih ahadeeth and ‘Silsila e ahadeeth dhaeefa ‘ and a compilation of dhaeef ahadeeth. The books are in more than 20 volumes. Mukhtar Ahmed Nadwi once narrated his experience while in a journey with Shaikh Albani.

“ On the way the car broke down and we remained seated, Albani then got out of the car , I kept on wondering where the shaikh had gone to, so I too stepped out and inquired about the shaikh. He was beneath his car repairing it with his own hands. At that time Shaikh Albani was already 60.”

This is enough to make me worry as to what am I leaving behind for own my Sawab e Jaariya and you too should worry, as the Qur’an rightly puts “ tThat was a generation that has passed away. They shall reap the fruits of what have done and you shall reap the fruits of what you have done…. (Surah Al Baqarah ch 2, verse 132 )

Copyright - Islamic Articles and Lectures

 Sheikh Feiz - Copyright

Question
Ahmad :
Asalaamu Alaykum. I was listening to one of your responses on copyright issues,

Now I wanted to know, that the Islamic lectures which are produced and have copyright labels; shouldn't we obey it because lets look at it this way:

All the time and effort to record that lecture, then all the time and effort to edit and all the time and effort to make the cover and to make copies onto dvd and to place them in cases. now if we look at all of this it all adds up money, weather the ink, cd's etc..

And lets say an Islamic organization sells Islamic lectures and they produce it. Are we not suppose to support them by buying the product so they can produce more islamic lectures in the future and also people do this job as a living, so is the copyright feature haram to have after all these points are into thought?

So Insh'Allah can you clear up things for me.

May Allah reward you brother Shaykh Feiz Insh'Allah with the best of rewards Jannah.

Wasalaam Walakum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh.

Answer

Sheikh Feiz:

Asalaamu Alaykum warahmatAllah wabarakatahu.
Dear brother Ahmad, I ask the Almighty to increase your knowledge, knowledge that is implemented then taught then patience in the face of adversity is observed.

I appreciate your understanding to this issue, the issue of copyright in islam, and i do respect your view. However there are a few things that i believe that should be looked at before passing any judgements on this issue, for indeed it is an issue of great controversy.

-Firstly:Islam is not the property of an individual. The Quran and the sunnah are divine revelations revealed to man in order that they be followed.

-Secondly: There is no precedent in the glorious Word of the Almighty nor in the sunnah, nor in the views of the early jurists (fuqaha) that knowledge of islam can be subjected to private ownership or to sale and purchase.

-Thirdly:I see it as a major obstuction in the spreading of this beautiful deen,as many people can only afford their basic daily needs which i believe are the majority, therefore copyright prevents these people from learning their deen.

-Forthly:Many people buy their islamic material online which in reality could lead to a prohibited act (i.e) credit cards etc...

-Fifthly:Copyright today for most people has become no more than business, where many people have lost the real focus of dawah which should be solely for the sake of Allah.

What I see from all this and much more my beloved brother Ahmad is that copyright is a major prevention of spreading this beautiful deen to the world.

Allah the Most High says in surat Ad-Duha:11 (interpretation of its meaning):
"And proclaim the grace of your Lord"

The prophet (peace be upon him) said:"Convey regarding me even if it were one verse"

He (peace be upon him) also said:"Whoever calls people to right guidance will have a reward like that of those who follow him, without that detracting from their reward in the slightest..."Narrated by Muslim, "

So how can one convey this beautiful deen which is the greatest treasure on this earth when he is prevented from doing so because of copyright.

May Allah the Almighty forgive us for our shortcomings and guide us to that which He loves and is pleased with.
This is my opinion and Allah knows best.
Sh Feiz,wa salam alaykum warahmatAllah wabarakatahu

Copyright Issue By Shaykh Sulayman Ibn Nasir Al-‘Ulwan
Shaykh Sulaymaan was asked about this issue once, and his reply included the following:

1-This is a contemporary issue in which the Scholars have differed.
2-Some have unrestrictedly rejected the idea, some have unrestrictedly accepted the idea, and some have explained it according to details.
3-His conclusion was that things that aren't your work cannot be copyrighted, such as works from the Scholars of the passed, like if someone takes it and claims rights to the work itself because the person happened to publish it.
4-If the person does the work himself, he has the right to copyright it in terms of buying and selling, in that it is not allowed for anyone to copy it and make money off of it except with his permission.
5-If someone wants to copy it in order to learn or teach, spread Da'wah, etc. he has the right to do so even if it is copyrighted, but cannot make money off of it. Also, if he can pay, he should, as it took time and money for the thing to be written and published to begin with.

Wa Allaahu A'lam.

From Beauty Full to Beauty Fooled.......The Myth of Good looking

When grandfathers in half trousers, shirts tucked in and sleeves rolled up, move on the beaches displaying the youth, which they have already lost, and grand mothers in sleeveless T shirts, tight slacks , roam around the lounges of malls staring at the windows of fashion stores, to look for the latest in the fashion world, then we come to the conclusion that the definition of beauty has changed and so has the perception of beauty.

These days every one is trying to look good. So the gyms, the diet and health centers, articles and books on health all are in good business. The other day a grooming class for males in Mumbai announced that they were entering into their twenty-fifth year. Among the many lessons in the etiquette they teach, one thing that strikes me is "how to be decent with opposite sex". The love pundits know it very well that the best way to impress the opposite sex is to appear and behave decently.

Do you think that Iblis could have forced Adam and Eve to eat the forbidden fruit (or what so ever it was)? Surah Ar'af informs us of Iblis's approach in the verse, 21 “ and he swore that he was their well wisher......" There are modern Iblises around us swearing through hundreds of advertisements in almost every TV channel and every page of Newspapers and magazines that they are the well wishers of women folk. They are every where. Even in pages of face books they lurk at young girls . Unfortunately some of them even appear as sheikhs and muftis in da'wah and in fiqh, pretending to teach you one thing but wanting you to learn another.

It is very amusing to note that even educated people are beautyfooled by the new standards of beauty. It seems that aging people don't want to grow older and young girls, as young as nine ,are in a hurry to grow into young women. Comparing themselves with movie actresses and models they have a terrible complex of looks and weights. Considering the time spend in gazing at the mirror, if only mirrors were perishable items like shoes and dresses, getting ragged after using, all of them would crack in few weeks.

A little girl shared her experience of dieting on the net : I am afraid of putting on weight , so I stuck a picture of a fat lady on the door of my refrigerator to frighten my self every time I am tempted to open for having ice cream or butter.!

People refuse to age, they don’t want to look old, so they seek refuge under the sharp knives of cosmetic surgeons and anti aging creams to hide their wrinkles and grey hair. Women entering into thirties are afraid of loosing their jobs and their boyfriends to the younger girls.

A man's class is no more measured by the amount of his wealth but by the number of female following he has. Adultery and fornication is served like a tasty dish. Famous men appear in public with beautifooled girls proudly displayed like trophies.

The school children are also dragged in this pomp and show. Sexy education is crept inside their mind in the pretext of sex education with the inclusion of 'how to use contraceptives' and 'ways of avoiding unwanted pregnancies'. The age of consent has replaced the age of marriage in many constitutions. It turns into a liberty to enjoy with whomever you want, without taking any social or financial burden of females. "Fruits of Radical Liberation"

Lessons in Tests and Trials

It makes you examine the reality that man is a weak creation without any power or strength, except in your Lord. Thereupon arrogance, false pride and negligence will be removed and you will come to know that you are really poor and in need of your Creator, the Almighty, the Most Perfect, and so you resort to Him.

Tests unravel the reality of this life. Even with this amusement and play there is also toil and fatigue. This is the reality of this life - one day life is smiling at you, and the other day it is turning its back on you. This is the nature of life, but man forgets that. The perfect life is the one which follows, wherein there is no toil, worry, fatigue or disease.

And this life of the world is only amusement and play! Verily, the home of the Hereafter - that is the life indeed (i.e. the eternal life that will never end), if they but knew. [Noble Quran 29:64]

The tests and trials remind the person of the favors bestowed upon him by Allah. We are reminded to avoid being in a state of joy such that we feel arrogance and likewise to avoid a state of sadness and grief such that one feels despair.

No calamity befalls on the earth or in yourselves but it is inscribed in the Book of Decrees (Al-Lauh Al-Mahfouz) before We bring it into existence. Verily, that is easy for Allah. In order that you may not grieve at the things over that you fail to get, nor rejoice over that which has been given to you. And Allah likes not every prideful boaster. [Noble Quran 57:22-23]

Trials and tests remind the person of his shortcomings and diseases (of the heart and actions) so that he can take preventive measures against them.

And whatever of misfortune befalls you, it is because of what your hands have earned. And He pardons much. [Noble Quran 42:30].
There is a chance for repentance before the greater torment occurs. And verily, We will make them taste of the near torment (i.e. the torment in the life of this world, i.e. disasters, calamities) prior to the supreme torment (in the Hereafter), in order that they may (repent and) return (i.e. accept Islam). [Noble Quran 32:21]

Tests and trials serve as great teaching processes through which one learns patience. We cannot be firm upon truth and obedience except with patience.

But none is granted it except those who are patient - and none is granted it except the owner of the great portion (of happiness in the Hereafter, i.e., Paradise, and of a high moral character) in this world. [Noble Quran 41:35]

Travelling and Commuting : the ProductiveMuslim style !

Today’s post is about commuting ProductiveMuslim style! ;) How you can make the most of those long hours on the road so that they truly add value to your life (and afterlife) instead of subtracting from it.

Now this all depends on which commuting vehicle you’re using (and trust me, I’ve used them all). Below is a breakdown of what you can do in each type of commuting vehicle. But before we get into that, a few prerequisites:

1. When you leave your house, remember the dua for leaving the house

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ
Bismillahi tawakkaltu allah lah la hawla wala kuwata ila billa

‘In the name of Allaah, I place my trust in Allaah, and there is no might nor power except with Allaah.’

Allahumma innee a’uoozubika an adhilla auw adhalla auw azilla auw uzalla auw auw uzhlama auw ajhala auw yujhala ‘alaiyya

‘O Allaah, I take refuge with You lest I should stray or be led astray, or slip or be tripped, or oppress or be oppressed, or behave foolishly or be treated foolishly.’

2. Remember the dua for riding/mounting a vehicle:

بِسْمِ اللّهِ ، الْحَمْد’ للّهِ ، سُبْحانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنقَلِبُونَ

Bismillah. Alhamdulilah. SubhanAll-ladhi, sakh-khara lana, haatha, wa-ma kunna lahu mukrineen. Wa inna ila Rubbina lamunqalibuun.

‘In the name of Allaah and all praise if for Allaah. How perfect He is, the One Who has placed this (Transport) at our service and we ourselves would not have been capable of that, and to our Lord if our final destiny.’
3. Invest in a good MP3 player

Either an MP3 player with A-B functionality or an iPod Touch/iPhone with a Quran Application installed

With the above sorted, here are some ProductiveMuslim to-do’s whilst commuting :

Bike:

Things you can do while riding your bike:
1. Memorize the Quran:

Using your MP3 player with A-B Functionality you can specify where your MP3 player should start on a track, and where it should end, then loop it. This means you can choose a Quran track and specify from which verse the recitation should begin and which verse it should stop at, then repeat these verses as many times as you want. The result: memorizing a whole set of new verses!

Next day move on to the next set of verses and repeat the process as you cycle along. (For this to truly work, I suggest you memorize the verses at home first before you leave your house, ideally after Fajr Salah, and then listen to them on your way to work and back). The iPod Touch/iPhone can be used in a similar way using the excellent iQuran Pro software.
2. Contemplate on Allah’s creation:

The most enjoyable part for me when riding a bike is contemplating on Allah’s creation: the heavens, the earth, the mountains, and the scenery that surrounds us truly reminds me of the verse:
إِنَّ فِي خَلْقِ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَاخْتِلَافِ اللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ لَآيَاتٍ لِّأُولِي الْأَلْبَابِ

“Verily! In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the alternation of night and day, there are indeed signs for men of understanding”. (3:190)

To contemplate most effectively, I suggest you use a map and leave early for work so that you can try a different route each day or get a chance to cycle around your favorite park at least once before you go to work. Breathing in the fresh air and entertaining your eyes with Nature is an absolute joy that will set your mood straight for the rest of the day.
3. Remember Allah:

Connected to the above. Simply saying “SubhanaAllah, Al-Hamdulillah, La ilaha illa Allah, Allahu Akbar” or any other supplication or remembrance is a truly productive and rewarding way of spending your commute. It connects you to the Hereafter, makes you focus on the “bigger” picture beyond this life and reminds you of who you’re worshipping. A great way to start or end your day!
4. Exercise:

Riding a bike is a natural exercise, so not only are you commuting but you’re also exercising! My only advice here is to make sure your work place has a shower room (and of course don’t forget to pack a change of clothes!)
Also remember such things are possible when you are good at biking and the traffic is not heavy.
Car:

If you’re driving a car (you can do all of the above (except the exercise part) + the following:

AudioBooks/Lectures/Courses/Podcasts: I’ve recently rediscovered the joy of learning through listening with my iPod Touch connected to my car’s radio device. I can listen to any audiobook, lectures, Islamic MP3 courses, or Podcasts I download to my iPod. I completed a 2 hour life coaching course, a marketing course (36 CDs), an Islamic seerah course (32 CDs), and 100s of hours of other talks through doing so.

Now most people do the above one way or another, BUT here are some advanced tips to really make the most of ALL your audio files:

a) Have a structured course planned out – so you know exactly what you’re listening to and when, and can build on your knowledge instead of starting on something then changing it to something else… then coming back to where you started!

b) If you truly want to make the most of what you listened to, try taking notes as you wait in busy traffic OR when you get home. That will help reinforce what you learnt, and you will be more likely to use it inshaAllah.

Trains/Bus/Plane/ Personal Chauffeur:

Again, you can do all of the above + the following:
Video Podcasts:

Watch Video Podcasts/Courses through your iPod Touch/iPhone or any other MP4technology that displays video on small screens. Again, you can download these courses (some of which are free) to your laptop then sync with your devices.
Read Books/Study:

Spend a weekend in a bookstore and purchase a set of beneficial books to read on your daily commute. Nothing like lifelong learning :). Again, make sure the books are part of a “plan”, i.e. let’s say you’re interested in marketing this week, then all your audio files for the car rides and the books you read should relate to that subject.
Reply to your e-mails offline:

If you carry your laptop with you, you may find it very useful (especially on trains/planes) to catch up on e-mails and prepare draft replies to them. For those of you who check your e-mails online, I highly suggest you set up your laptop so that it downloads ALL your e-mails from your different accounts to one e-mail client, e.g. Microsoft Outlook, Apple Mail, Mozilla Thunderbird and so on. That way, you don’t need internet connection to check your e-mail, the e-mails are downloaded when you’re connected to the internet, and you can read them/ and prepare draft replies at your convenience.
Set Agendas:

I learnt this from David Allen’s Productivity System “Getting Things Done”: Prepare an agenda for every person you’re going to meet. Isn’t it annoying when you meet somebody that you had so much to tell or ask of, but can only remember 2 things from that list?! Writing down ‘an agenda’ for everyone you’re going to meet or need to see is a helpful and productive tip to make the most of that meeting. So if you’re sitting in your train or on the plane… write out those agendas! If you’re traveling for a meeting and no agenda has been set, use the time you have to write an agenda. It doesn’t have to be elaborate, a ‘short list’ will do.
Phone Calls/SMS:

Yup, I’m that annoying person who never stops talking on the phone from the moment the train/bus starts moving till the end. OK, I’m not. I actually hate those people. But a train ride/bus ride is prime time for a quick catch up call/SMS. Those who know me, know that I cannot sit down and speak over the phone and I just love walking and talking… so I normally use the time going to and fro from train stations, or up and down the terminal to really get most of the phones calls out of the way. (p.s. By the way, that’s a life coaching tip there: NEVER sit down when talking over the phone, especially if you need to convince the person on the other end of the line of something or you’ll be asked difficult questions. I guess that’s where ‘thinking on your feet’ comes from).
-Avoid using mobile in crowd for you may drop it and lose it or it may get damaged.
Think & contemplate – brainstorm ideas/Journal:

Whilst contemplating on Allah’s creation (see above) thoughts and ideas enter (& leave) my mind! I need to capture them. Hence, with my trusted Moleskine Folio Journal, I write down ALL the ideas in the form of mindmaps, journal entries, pictures, charts etc… Most of my favourite posts on ProductiveMuslim were born in those precious me-time moments on the train/bus/plane with dear old Moleskine ;) They provide a very useful platform for developing ideas that just got captured during my journey.
You can now see why I love commuting! No matter which vehicle you put me in, with the proper planning and right tools, my daily commute becomes a true asset to my daily life instead of a time-waster in traffic :)

The Pareto Principle (80-20 Rule)

Aisha (radiyallahu anha) narrarated;

“The Messenger of Allâh [pbuh], whenever he is given the opportunity to choose between two affairs, he always chooses the easiest and the most convenient. But if he is certain that it is sinful, he will be as far as he could from it.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari 1/503]

Do you always go about doing a task efficiently and effectively?

The 80-20 Rule has helped me tremendously in the personal effectiveness area. Also known as the Pareto Principle, the 80-20 rule states that 20% of a task’s effort accounts for 80% of the value of that task. This also means that 80% of a task only yields 20% of the value of that task. I apply the 80-20 Rule at home, the masjid, the university, and especially at work. Following the Sunnah on personal effectiveness yields great benefits.

The Pareto Principle (80-20 Rule)Simply put, The 80-20 Rule requires that you:

1. Do it now!
2. Do what matters the most first.
3. Be efficient and effective.
4. Take the easiest and most convenient path to getting things done.
5. Work without interruption to get that 20% done.

Find out what parts of your life belong in the crucial 20%, and focus your efforts there. Be absolutely ruthless in refusing to spend time where it simply cannot give you optimal results. Invest your time where it has the potential to pay off big. The first thing is to list out what you have to get done for that day.

Let me give you a few personal examples.

At Home:

1. Tahajjud/Study/Fajr
2. Household Chores
3. Family Time- helping with homework, teaching Islam, time with spouse, board games etc.
4. Grocery Shopping
5. Check personal email.
6. Update Blog
7. Check personal voice mail and return calls.
8. Work out if I didn’t get a chance to during the day.
9. Personal Reading and study
10. Watch TV, catch up on news etc.

There are ten tasks on this list. 20% of 10 = 2. So 2 tasks on this list is more important and will give me the greatest yield on my time and give me fulfillment as well. Just because I underlined two tasks, doesn’t mean that I don’t get anything else done. Most days I accomplish what I set out to do. If something doesn’t get done, it carries over to the next day until it gets done. These two tasks are just what I feel will give me the greatest benefit and sense of accomplishment at home.

At the Office:

1. Check bank balances for properties/entities.
2. Check email and schedule tasks.
3. Bank Reconciliations
4. Cash Flow Analysis
5. Generate Financial Reports and GLs
6. Monthly recurring entries.
7. Research issues from Accountants, AP/AR personnel.
8. Meetings
9. Lunches
10. Review GLs for errors, accruals, reclasses.
11. Reports to Accountant for tax preparation.
12. Schedules for Tenant Improvement Leasing Commissions
13. Insurance Schedules

So at the office I have underlined the three tasks (20%) out of 13 that will make the greatest difference in my day at work. I do not sit on or procrastinate with these tasks. These three tasks are higher priority for this day and will get me the most recognition and personal accomplishment for this day inshaAllah (Azza Wa Jal).

You will ALWAYS have too much to do and too little time. It is said that the average person has about 300 hours of projects to take care of right now. We have books to read, surahs to learn, Arabic studies, projects at work and home, along with everything else. The fact is that you will NEVER get caught up. However, I was able to get caught up because I stopped doing things. By making a list of ten things and then highlighting the top 20%, this will be worth more than the other 80%.

So select your most important task right now and discipline yourself to complete that task right now. Stay on it until it’s done. If you start out doing small things first, then you will find as I have experienced that small things tend to multiply. You will then spend your entire day doing small things. If you prioritize the big things, these will double your productivity.

Islam en Español: In Conversion, a New Identity

AT the North Hudson Islamic Educational Center in Union City, N.J., there are Spanish-language classes on the Koran and an annual Latino Muslim Day. About 35 percent of the center’s congregation is Hispanic, and there are frequent conversions in which Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Mexicans, Cubans and others recite the Shahadah, a declaration of belief.

While the majority of Hispanics in the United States are Catholic, some studies have estimated that there are as many as 200,000 Hispanic converts to Islam in this country. Among them are Musa Franco, top left, a Colombian who converted at age 13, walking to the mosque with his wife, Candice Elam. And Shari Abdul Malik, top right, placing a Costa Rican flag on a table for Latino Muslim Day at the North Hudson center.

Then there is Miriam Celeste Colo’n, far right second row, who, after converting in 2002, started her own clothing line, Dignity Apparel — “where modesty meets the fashion industry.” Her line combines her urban-Latin style with traditional Islamic dress. And Muslimah Rodriguez, who decided in 2009 to start wearing the veil known as a niqab, and is shown, at right, at an Islamic convention, where she recited a poem on being a Muslim woman.

These photographs were taken by Eirini Vourloumis, who was raised in Athens and baptized Greek Orthodox, but whose mother’s family is Muslim. After 9/11, she grew increasingly interested in Muslim culture, and while at an Indonesian mosque in Long Island City, Queens, for an Akika, or blessing, ceremony for a new baby, met some women affiliated with the North Hudson center. Spending time in Union City, she found many converts who remained immersed in their ethnic food and music but were building a dual identity as Muslims through devotion, dress and fasting.

Valentine Valentiner Valentinest

Had St. Valentine been alive today and had he registered the copy right of Valentine's day he would have earned Billions of Dollars through selling his copy rights to card manufacturers, e- cards senders and hoteliers who hold Valentine days in their eating lounges which other wise run empty.

The U.S. Greeting Card Association estimates that approximately 190 million valentines are sent each year in the US. Half of those valentines are given to family members other than husband or wife, usually to children. When you include the valentine-exchange cards made in school activities the figure goes up to 1 billion.

Valentine day is a big business, and a huge industry of developing the art of fooling females through display of artificial love. This day, millions of husbands would be sending love cards to their wives declaring their unending love, but then quietly take out their hidden girlfriends or mistresses to their favorite restaurants. Many rich young men would be courting different girls, during breakfast, lunch and dinner and vowing a monopolized love to each of them. According to many researchers the most common statement delivered to females on the Valentine day is : I am only yours

When hidden adultery and fornication is announced proudly and celebrated widely the moral environment gets so much polluted that every day seems to be a Valentine day, even in the metropolitan cities of India and Pakistan, where young people get cholera of western culture and they behave more valentinous than St Valentine himself.

When a fossilized festival associated with the martyrdom of saints, gets evolved into a festival of adultery and fornication in a few centuries then it becomes an amusing subject for thorough research. Valentine day is the strongest proof for those who allege that even religious festivals can also be corrupted.

How To Erase Our Sins

Following is a compilation of Ahadîth that speaks of ways in which we can erase our sins, InshaAllâh!
Repenting

A servant [of Allâh's] committed a sin and said: O Allâh, forgive me my sin. And He (glorified and exalted be He) said: My servant has committed a sin and has known that he has a Lord who forgives sins and punishes for them. Then he sinned again and said: O Lord, forgive me my sin. And He (glorified and exalted be He) said: My servant has committed a sin and has known that he has a Lord who forgives sins and punishes for them. Then he sinned again and said: O Lord, forgive me my sin. And He (glorified and exalted be He) said: My servant has committed a sin and has known that he has a Lord who forgives sins and punishes for sins. Do what you wish, for I have forgiven you. [Hadîth Qudsi]

O son of Adam, so long as you call upon Me and ask of Me, I shall forgive you for what you have done, and I shall not mind. O son of Adam, were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and were you then to ask forgiveness of Me, I would forgive you. O son of Adam, were you to come to Me with sins nearly as great as the earth and were you then to face Me, ascribing no partner to Me, I would bring you forgiveness nearly as great at it. [Hadîth Qudsi]

Abû Bakr radhiAllâhu `anhu reported:

"I heard the Prophet sallAllâhu `alayhi wa sallam saying: 'Allâh forgives the man who commits a sin (then feels ashamed), purifies himself, offers a prayer and seeks His forgiveness.' Then he recited the 'ayyah: 'And those who, when they do an evil thing or wrong themselves, remember Allâh and implore forgiveness for their sins - and who can forgive sins except Allâh? - and will not knowingly repeat (the wrong) they did. The reward of such will be forgiveness from their Lord, and gardens underneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever- a bountiful reward for workers."' [al-'lmrân: 135-136]. [Abû Dawûd, an-Nasa'i, Ibn Majah, al-Baihaqi, and at-Tirmidhî who calls it hasan.]

Performing Wudhû

Narrated Abû Hurayrah radhiAllâhu `anhu: Allâh's Apostle sallAllâhu `alayhi wa sallam said:

When a bondsman - a Muslim or a believer - washes his face (in course of ablution), every sin he contemplated with his eyes will be washed away from his face along with water, or with the last drop of water ; when he washes his hands, every sin they wrought will be effaced from his hands with the water, or with the last drop of water; and when he washes his feet, every sin towards which his feet have walked will be washed away with the water, or with the last drop of water, with the result that he comes out pure from all sins. [Sahîh Muslim]

Narrated Uthmân ibn AffânradhiAllâhu `anhu:

The Messenger of Allâh sallAllâhu `alayhi wa sallam said: He who performed ablution well, his sins would come out from his body, even coming out from under his nails. [Sahîh Muslim]

Performing Prayer

Narrated Uthmân ibn Affân radhiAllâhu `anhu: "I heard Allâh's Apostle sallAllâhu `alayhi wa sallam say:

When the time for a prescribed prayer comes, if any Muslim performs ablution well and offers his prayer) with humility and bowing, it will be an expiation for his past sins, so long as he has not committed a major sin; and this applies to for all times. [Sahîh Muslim]

Narrated Abû Huraira radhiAllâhu `anhu: "Allâh's Apostle said,

"The congregational prayer of anyone amongst you is more than twenty (five or twenty seven) times in reward than his prayer in the market or in his house, for if he performs ablution completely and then goes to the mosque with the sole intention of performing the prayer, and nothing urges him to proceed to the mosque except the prayer, then, on every step which he takes towards the mosque, he will be raised one degree or one of his sins will be forgiven. The angels will keep on asking Allâh's forgiveness and blessings for everyone of you so long as he keeps sitting at his praying place. The angels will say, 'O Allâh, bless him! O Allâh, be merciful to him!' as long as he does not do Hadath or a thing which gives trouble to the other." The Prophet further said, "One is regarded in prayer so long as one is waiting for the prayer." [Sahîh Al-Bukhari]

Narrated Abû Hurayrah radhiAllâhu `anhu:

"The Messenger of Allâh sallAllâhu `alayhi wa sallam said: He who purified himself in his house, and then he walked to one of the houses of Allâh for the sake of performing a fard (obligatory act) out of the Fara'id (obligatory acts) of Allâh, both his steps (would be significant) as one of them would obliterate his sin and the second one would raise his status. [Sahîh Muslim]

Attending the Jumu'ah Salâh

Narrated Abû Hurayrah radhiAllâhu `anhu: The Messenger of Allâh sallAllâhu `alayhi wa sallam said:

Five prayers and from one Friday prayer to (the next) Friday prayer is an expiation (of the sins committed in between their intervals) if major sins are not committed. [Sahîh Muslim]

Narrated by Salman Al Farsi radhiAllâhu `anhu: The Prophet sallAllâhu `alayhi wa sallam said,

"Whoever takes a bath on Friday, purifies himself as much as he can, then uses his (hair) oil or perfumes himself with the scent of his house, then proceeds (for the Jumua prayer) and does not separate two persons sitting together (in the mosque), then prays as much as (Allâh has) written for him and then remains silent while the Imam is delivering the Khutba, his sins in-between the present and the last Friday would be forgiven." [Sahîh Al-Bukhari]

Doing good deeds

Narrated Ibn Masud radhiAllâhu `anhu: A man kissed a woman and then came to Allâh's Apostle and told him of that, so this Divine Inspiration was revealed to the Prophet sallAllâhu `alayhi wa sallam:

"And offer Prayers perfectly at the two ends of the day, and in some hours of the night; (i.e. (five) compulsory prayers). Verily, the good deeds remove the evil deeds (small sins). That is a reminder for the mindful." (Qur'aan : 11.114) The man said, Is this instruction for me only?" The Prophet said, "It is for all those of my followers who encounter a similar situation." [Sahîh Al-Bukhari]

Performing Umrah and Hajj

Narrated by Abû Huraira : The Prophet sallAllâhu `alayhi wa sallam said,

"Whoever performs Hajj for Allâh's pleasure and does not have sexual relations with his wife, and does not do evil or sins then he will return (after Hajj free from all sins) as if he were born anew." [Sahîh Al-Bukhari]

Abdullah ibn Mas'ud radhiAllâhu `anhu narrated that the Prophet sallAllâhu `alayhi wa sallam said:

"Alternate between Hajj and 'Umrah (regularly), for these two remove poverty and sins just as the blacksmith's bellows removes all impurities from metals like iron, gold and silver. The reward for Hajj Mabrur is nothing short of Paradise." [Nasa'i and Tirmidhi, who regards it a sound hadîth ]

Narrated Abû Huraira radhiAllâhu `anhu: Allâh's Apostle sallAllâhu `alayhi wa sallam said,

"(The performance of) 'Umra is an expiation for the sins committed (between it and the previous one). And the reward of Hajj Mabrur (the one accepted by Allâh) is nothing except Paradise." [Sahîh Al-Bukhari]

 Saying Aآmîn'

Narrated by Abû Huraira radhiAllâhu `anhu: The Prophet sallAllâhu `alayhi wa sallam said,

"When the Imâm says 'Amîn', then you should all say ‘Amîn’, for the angels say ‘آmîn’ at that time, and he whose ‘آmîn’ coincides with the ‘Amîn’ of the angels, all his past sins will be forgiven." [Sahîh Al-Bukhari]

Fasting and performing prayers in the night of Qadr in Ramadân

Narrated by Abû Huraira radhiAllâhu `anhu: The Prophet sallAllâhu `alayhi wa sallam said,

"Whoever fasted the month of Ramadân out of sincere Faith (i.e. belief) and hoping for a reward from Allâh, then all his past sins will be forgiven, and whoever stood for the prayers in the night of Qadr out of sincere Faith and hoping for a reward from Allâh, then all his previous sins will be forgiven ." [Sahîh Al-Bukhari]

Sending salutations

Abû Talha Al Ansari radhiAllâhu `anhu said, "The Prophet, sallAllâhu `alayhi wa sallam, woke up one day cheerful and beaming. His companions exclaimed, 'O Prophet of Allâh, you woke up today cheerful and beaming.' He replied,

'Yes! A messenger of Allâh, the Mighty and the Glorified, came to me and said, "If anyone from your ummah sends you a salutation, Allâh will record for him ten good deeds, wipe off ten of his sins, and raise him thereby ten degrees in rank, and He will return his salutation with a similar salutation".' [Ahmad] Ibn Kathîr considers this a sound hadîth ]

Being kind to animals

Narrated Abû Huraira radhiAllâhu `anhu: Allâh's Apostle sallAllâhu `alayhi wa sallam said,

"While a man was walking he felt thirsty and went down a well and drank water from it. On coming out of it, he saw a dog panting and eating mud because of excessive thirst. The man said, 'This (dog) is suffering from the same problem as that of mine. So he (went down the well), filled his shoe with water, caught hold of it with his teeth and climbed up and watered the dog. Allâh thanked him for his (good) deed and forgave him." The people asked, "O Allâh's Apostle! Is there a reward for us in serving (the) animals?" He replied, "Yes, there is a reward for serving any animate." [Sahîh Al-Bukhari]

Narrated Abû Huraira radhiAllâhu `anhu: Allâh's Apostle sallAllâhu `alayhi wa sallam said,

"A prostitute was forgiven by Allâh, because, passing by a panting dog near a well and seeing that the dog was about to die of thirst, she took off her shoe, and tying it with her head-cover she drew out some water for it. So, Allâh forgave her because of that." [Sahîh Al-Bukhari]

Leaving grey hair

Amr ibn Shu'aib related on the authority of his father from his grandfather that the Prophet sallAllâhu `alayhi wa sallam said,

"Do not pluck the grey hairs as they are a Muslim's light. Never a Muslim grows grey in Islam except that Allâh writes for him, due to that, a good deed. And he raises him a degree. And he erases for him, due to that, one of his sins." [Related by Ahmad, Abû Dawûd, at-Tirmidhi, an-Nasa'i and Ibn Majah] And Anas said, "We used to hate that a man should pluck out his white hairs from his head or beard." [Sahîh Muslim]

Some simple supplications through which we can erase our sins, Insha'Allâh!

Narrated Abû Huraira radhiAllâhu `anhu: Allâh's Apostle said,

"Whoever says, 'Subhan Allâh wa bihamdihi,' one hundred times a day, will be forgiven all his sins even if they were as much as the foam of the sea." [Sahîh Al-Bukhari]

Narrated Abû Huraira radhiAllâhu `anhu: Allâh's Apostle sallAllâhu `alayhi wa sallam said,

"Whoever says: 'La ilaha illal-lah wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahu-l-mulk wa lahu-l-hamd wa huwa 'ala kulli shai'in qadir,' one hundred times will get the same reward as given for manumitting ten slaves; and one hundred good deeds will be written in his accounts, and one hundred sins will be deducted from his accounts, and it (his saying) will be a shield for him from Satan on that day till night, and nobody will be able to do a better deed except the one who does more than he." [Sahîh Al-Bukhari]

Narrated Abû Hurayrah radhiAllâhu `anhu: Allâh's Apostle sallAllâhu `alayhi wa sallam said:

If anyone extols Allâh after every prayer thirty-three times [SubhanAllâh], and praises Allâh thirty-three times [Alhamdulillah], and declares His Greatness thirty-three times [Allâh hu Akbar], ninety-nine times in all, and say to complete a hundred: "There is no god but Allâh, having no partner with Him, to Him belongs sovereignty and to Him to praise due, and He is Potent over everything," his sins will be forgiven even if these are as Abûndant as the foam of the sea. [Sahîh Muslim]

Abû Hurairah radhiAllâhu `anhu reported that the Prophet, sallAllâhu `alayhi wa sallam, said,

"If anyone sits in an assembly where there is much clamor and says before getting up to leave, "Subhanaka Allâhumma wa bihamdika, ashadu an-la illaha illa-anta, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayka" (Glory be to You, O Allâh, and I begin with declaring all praise is due to You, I testify that there is no god but You; I ask Your pardon and turn to You in repentance), he will be forgiven any sin that he might have committed while in that assembly. [Tirmidhi and Al-Baihaqi, (Kitab ad-D'wat Al-kabir)]

Mu'adh b. Anas radhiAllâhu `anhu reported that the Prophet, sallAllâhu `alayhi wa sallam, said,

"If anyone wears a new garment and says, "Alhamdu lillahillazi kasaabi hazaa wa razakabehi min ghairi hawlin minna walaa kuwwata" 'All praise be to Allâh, Who clothed me with this garment and provided it for me, with no power or strength from myself' Allâh will forgive all his previous sins." [Abû Dawûd, At-Tirmidhi and Ibn Maajah]

When a Muslim does the same sin again and again & Repentance

Does Allaah accept a person’s repentance every time he sins and repents, even if he does that many times?

For how long does Allaah forgive a person’s sin? If he repents and seeks forgiveness from his sin, then goes and commits the same sin again, then he seeks forgiveness again then commits the same sin again, and so on – does Allaah forgive him or does that means that he is not sincere towards Allaah, especially if he repeats that sin after a short while, but he does not stop seeking forgiveness?.

Praise be to Allaah.

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And those who, when they have committed Faahishah (illegal sexual intercourse) or wronged themselves with evil, remember Allaah and ask forgiveness for their sins; — and none can forgive sins but Allaah — and do not persist in what (wrong) they have done, while they know.

136. For such, the reward is forgiveness from their Lord, and Gardens with rivers flowing underneath (Paradise), wherein they shall abide forever. How excellent is this reward for the doers (who do righteous deeds according to Allaah’s Orders)”

[Aal ‘Imraan 3:135-136]

Ibn Katheer said:

The words “and do not persist in what (wrong) they have done” mean: they repent from their sins and quickly turn to Allaah, and they do not persist in their sin, rather they give it up, and if they do that again they repent to Him.

Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 1/408.

It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say: “A person committed a sin and said: ‘My Lord, I have sinned; forgive me.’ His Lord said: ‘Is My slave acknowledging that he has a Lord Who forgives sins and punishes for them? I have forgiven My slave.’ Then as much time passed as Allaah willed, then he committed a sin and said, ‘My Lord, I have sinned; forgive me.’ His Lord said: ‘Is My slave acknowledging that he has a Lord Who forgives sins and punishes for them? I have forgiven My slave.’ Then as much time passed as Allaah willed, then he committed a sin and said, ‘My Lord, I have sinned; forgive me.’ His Lord said: ‘Is My slave acknowledging that he has a Lord Who forgives sins and punishes for them? I have forgiven My slave,’ – three times…”

Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 7507; Muslim, 2758.

Al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) included this hadeeth under the heading: “Acceptance of repentance from sins even if the sins and repentance happen repeatedly.”

 He said in his Sharh:

We have already discussed this issue at the beginning of the Book of Repentance. These ahaadeeth clearly point to that, and even if the sin is repeated a hundred times or a thousand times or more, and he repents each time, his repentance will be accepted and his sin will be erased. And if he repents once from them all, his repentance will be valid.

Sharh Muslim, 17.75.

Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali said:

‘Umar ibn ‘Abd al-‘Azeez said: O people, whoever commits a sin, let him seek the forgiveness of Allaah and repent, and if he repeats it, let him seek the forgiveness of Allaah and repent, and if he repeats it, let him seek the forgiveness of Allaah and repent, for it is like chains around the neck of man, and doom lies in persisting in it.

What this means is that a person will inevitably commit the sins that it is decreed he will commit, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The son of Adam’s share of zina is decreed for him, and he will inevitably come to that…” But Allaah has given him a way out from the sins that he falls into and He erases them by means of repentance and seeking forgiveness. If he does that then he will escape from the evil of sin, but if he persists in his sin he will be doomed.

Jaami’ al-‘Uloom al-Hakam, 1/165.

Although Allaah hates sin and warns of punishment for it, He does not want His slaves to despair of His mercy. He likes the sinner to seek His forgiveness and repent to Him, but the Shaytaan likes it when despair fills a person’s heart and prevents him from repenting and turning to Allaah.

It was said to al-Hasan al-Basri: Would not any one of us feel ashamed before his Lord to seek forgiveness from his sin then go back to it, then seek forgiveness then go back to it? He said: The Shaytaan would like you to feel that way; never give up seeking forgiveness.

What will happened to that person doing same sin again and again ?

Praise be to Allaah.

Firstly:

If a person commits sin time after time, his sin is forgiven every time if he follows his sin with repentance – if his repentance each time is sincere. The evidence that it is permissible to repent time after time is the fact that those who apostatized from Islam at the time of Abu Bakr were brought back to Islam by Abu Bakr and he accepted that from them, although he knew that they had been kaafirs, then they entered Islam, then they went back to kufr, then they came back to Islam. All the Sahaabah accepted their repentance despite the fact that what the apostates had done was worse than what a sinning Muslim does. So the repentance of a sinning Muslim, even if he sins repeatedly, is more likely to be accepted than repentance on the part of a kaafir time after time.

But what we are saying is subject to the condition that the first and subsequent cases of repentance be sincere and from the heart, not simply an outward show of repentance.

What we are saying should not be understood to mean that we are encouraging sin and that it may be committed time after time, and that the Muslim should take the mercy of Allaah and the fact that Allaah accepts repentance as an excuse to commit sin. No, our intention is to encourage the sinner to repent time after time. We want to put the mind of the Muslim who wants to come back to Allaah at rest, and tell him that the gate of mercy is open, and that Allaah’s forgiveness is greater than his sin, so he should not despair of the mercy of Allaah and he should keep turning to Him.

Al-Bukhaari (7507) and Muslim (2758) narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said that his Lord said: “My slave commits sin, then he says, ‘O Allaah, forgive me my sin.’ Then Allaah says, ‘My slave has committed a sin, but he knows that he has a Lord Who forgives sin and takes away sin. So I forgive My slave.’ Then he commits sin again, and says, ‘O Allaah, forgive me my sin.’ Then Allaah says, ‘My slave has committed a sin, but he knows that he has a Lord Who forgives sin and takes away sin. So I forgive My slave.’ Then he commits sin again, and says, ‘O Allaah, forgive me my sin.’ Then Allaah says, ‘My slave has committed a sin, but he knows that he has a Lord Who forgives sin and takes away sin. So I forgive My slave.’ …”

Al-Haafiz Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali said:

Ibn Abi Dunya narrated with his isnaad that ‘Ali said: “The best of you is every tempted one who repents (i.e., every time he is tempted by this world, he repents).” It was said, “What if he sins again?” He said, “He should ask Allaah for forgiveness and repent.” It was said, “What if he sins again?” He said, “He should ask Allaah for forgiveness and repent.” It was said, “What if he sins again?” He said, “He should ask Allaah for forgiveness and repent.” It was said, “For how long?” He said, “Until the Shaytaan is defeated.”

Ibn Maajah narrated a marfoo’ report from Ibn Mas’ood which says: “The one who repents from sin is like the one who did not commit sin.” (Classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh Ibn Maajah, 3427).

It was said to al-Hasan: Shouldn’t one of us feel too shy to ask his Lord to forgive his sin, then do it again, then ask for forgiveness, then do it again? He said: The Shaytaan wishes that you would have this attitude, so do not tire of asking for forgiveness.

And it was narrated that he said: I do not think this is anything other than the attitude of the believers, i.e., every time a believer sins, he repents.

‘Umar ibn ‘Abd al-‘Azeez said in his khutbah: O people, whoever commits sin, let him seek the forgiveness of Allah and repent. If he does it again, let him seek the forgiveness of Allah and repent, and if he does it again, let him seek the forgiveness of Allah and repent. For it is sin which hangs around a person’s neck, and doom comes from persisting in sin.

What this means is that a person will inevitably commit the sins that it is decreed he will commit, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Every son of Adam has his share of zina (adultery) written for him, and that will inevitably catch up with him.” (Narrated by Muslim, 2657).

But Allaah has given people a way out from the sins they commit and sin is erased by repentance and seeking forgiveness. If they do that then they will get rid of the evil of sin, but if they persist in sin, then they will be doomed.

Jaami’ al-‘Uloom wa’l-Hakam, 1/164-165.

What is meant by repentance is returning to Allaah, giving up sin and hating it, and regretting falling short in obedience to Allaah. Al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:
Repentance is essential from every sin, even if it is something between a person and Allaah and has nothing to do with the rights of another person. There are three conditions of repentance:

1- You should give up the sin
2- You should regret having done it
3- You should resolve never to go back to it.

If one of these three is missing, then your repentance is not sincere. If the sin has to do with the rights of another person, then there are four conditions: the three mentioned above and restoring the rights of that person. If it is money or property, etc, it must be returned to him; if it had to do with slandering him etc, then you should allow him to insult him in return, or ask for his forgiveness; if it had to do with backbiting about him, then you have to ask for his pardon. It is essential to repent from all sins; if a person repents from some, his repentance from the sins from which he repented is valid – according to the scholars who follow the right path – but he must still repent from the rest as well.
End quote.
Based on the above, if these conditions are met by the person who is repenting, then there is the hope that his repentance will be accepted, by Allaah’s leave. After that he should not worry about waswaas (whispers) suggesting that his repentance is not accepted, because that is from the Shaytaan and is contrary to what Allaah and His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) have told us, that repentance is accepted if it is sincere.

And Allaah knows best.

Muslims and College Life !

Young people live for the day when they can move out of the house and go to college and finally be free. Freedom from their parents, from restrictions on their lifestyle, from everyone telling them what to do.
This is why in college you find a whole generation that does what they want. Life's short they say, let's enjoy ourselves while we can.

So it goes for Muslims. In college you find the most amazing things, Muslims who don't pray, Muslims who date , go out to parties and drink.

*for representation purpose only

Why is this happening?

For one, when students go off to university they finally realize that what they believed in was blind. Religion becomes like a fairytale, when they got old enough, they knew better than to believe in it.

Most have little knowledge about Islam and have maybe memorized the right rituals to get by. Why believe something on faith, they ask. After all we cannot see heaven or hell.
How do we know Islam is right anyway?

Islamic culture to them means marrying someone they never knew. It means arranged marriages and never hanging out or having fun.

For girls Islamic culture has even less to offer. It would mean double standards or having to serve a husband the rest of her life.

The western alternative to this looks alot more attractive.

In western culture "love and romance" are supposedly everywhere. Everyone is out looking for love freely. Meeting someone, going out, seeking pleasure sounds alot better.

But what about the downside? For love at first sight, you need to have the right image, the right hair, the right clothes.

Girls have to aspire to be like the latest supermodels, they have to hold back age. Who's going out with who, what are my friends thinking, what will happen if I don't get the right girl or guy, what is my girlfriend or boyfriend thinking, all become important.
Frustration, desperation, and unhappiness become the norm.
Imagine all the heartache youth would save if they followed the Islamic alternative.

In true Islam, unlike culture, there is no game playing. If two people wish to be involved they are both straight with one another.

Unlike what goes on today amongst some Muslims, they both meet each other and make a contract to marry. Women are treated with respect, there is no sexual bombardment like there is in western society. Sex in western culture is also often seen as a vice or a sin of the flesh. But even in religious Islam, sex is seen as natural. As long as it is in the right circumstances, when the two are committed to one another in marriage.

Drinking in college is also the norm unfortunately. If you don't drink or party you're seen as weird. Drinking is cool and a way for people to socialize, meet and have fun. The one who doesn't is less of a person and 'misses out'. Drinking and all the harms that come with it is cut off at the root in Islam. So many problems are avoided, accidents, pregnancy, violence and even rape for example.

In college and in the world, success in life is not seen in terms of religion. It is seen as what other people think, one's careers, how much money they make. If you are religious you must have failed at life. But why do we have this seperation? and this blindness in religion?
The Quran tells us again and again not to have blind faith, not to follow the religion of our forefathers.

Yet, we as Muslims have stopped thinking. We may think about what our friends or other people will say, but we avoid thinking about the real issues.
We spend so much time on the opposite sex, thinking about careers, money etc, but we forget to think about death and how much of this we will really be able to take with us?

"Every soul shall have a taste of death and only on the Day of Judgement shall you be paid your full recompense...for the life of this world is but goods and chattels of deception"
(Quran 3:185)

Shouldn't we take the time to contemplate what will happen to us after we hit the grave? After all, what is the point of life if we are not accountable for our actions? If there is no creator, what is the point of being honest or good.

If we really look at our life we see that everything is indefinate, getting a job, even living until tomorrow. In fact we could die anytime, this is a definate, the _only_ dead certain thing in our life.
Most of us believe we can make up for our actions later or we can be religious later.
We are gambling.

The chances of our dying today are little, but the stakes are high. Allah reminds us of the importance of this,

"O you who believe, obey Allah as he should be obeyed, and die not except in a state of Islam" (Qu'ran 3:102)

Each of us needs to decide.

On the Day of Judgment it will be us alone who will be asked about our actions.

"Verily We have revealed the Book to thee in truth, for (instructing) mankind. He, then that receives guidance benefits his own soul: but he that strays injurs his own soul..."
(Quran 39:41)

This is the true definition of freedom. To learn about Islam and the world openly. To contemplate about life and death. And after learning the truth, obeying the word of God.

"Those on whom knowledge has been bestowed may learn that the (Quran) is the truth from your Lord, and that they believe therein, and their hearts may be made humbly (open)to it..."
(Quran 22:54)

Once students have this rock-solid intellectual belief in Islam, the corruptness and falseness of the people around them is clear. The beauty and wisdom of the islamic way, the best alternative is clear. What others do is of less importance. If others think they were weird to pray or weird to be honest, they would still pray and still be honest because they know their deen.

Our Quran's are left on the top shelves, gathering dust. Sometimes the most it is read is when someone dies. How is this to help, when the guidance comes too late. The Quran is for the living. The path to understanding and following Islam comes from learning first.
How many of us are Muslim, yet have never read the Quran in our native language?

How many of us are Muslim, yet have yet to open a book on hadith or sunnah?

How many of us defend Islam to non-Muslims, but do not follow it ourselves?

May Allah forgive and lead us and all those lost to the straight path.

InshaAllah.

Ameen.

Why Smoking is Haraam

Praise be to Allah and peace and blessings be on His Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him).

Is smoking cigarettes Haraam?

Smoking is one of the things which has caused a lot of problems and harm these days and it has spread like wild fire. Perhaps you know that all nations of the world – Muslim and Non Muslim alike – have now started to fight smoking, because they know that it is very harmful. Islam forbids everything that is harmful. Undoubtedly there are foods and drinks which are beneficial and good, and others which are harmful and bad.

Before we discuss this topic in detail, we should know that Allaah the Almighty has divided things in the world into two types, good or permissible (al-tayyibaat, al-halaal) and evil or prohibited (al-khabaa'ith, al-haraam), and there is no third type.

Allah says (interpretation of the meaning) in surat al-A'raaf (7:157):
"And He makes good things halaal for them and bad things haraam."

Is smoking one of the good and lawful things (al-tayyibaat) or one of the evil and unlawful things (al-khabaa’ith)?

Considering this fact, smoking can either be permissible and good or prohibited and evil.

Thus, we present some of its characteristics and let the person asking the question see himself in which type lies smoking.

Firstly:

There is no disagreement among the physicians and sane people that smoking is harmful for the health of others who inhale the polluted breath of the smoker. It is one of the major causes of lung cancer and other diseases. It is also one of the major causes of death. Medical research has proven the harmful effects of smoking mothers on their children.

The offensive smell caused by smoking is a source of pain to the worshippers of Allah among humans and angels. The angels are offended and suffer from the same things that the human beings suffer from.

Allah said (interpretation of the meaning):

"Those who cause harm to believing men and women without any reason do a great sin." (Surat al-Ahzaab, 33:58)

"Do not kill yourself. Allah is Merciful unto you." (Surat al-Nisaa' 4:29)

In addition, His Prophet SAWS (peace be upon him) said:

"There is no harm or causing of harm (in Islaam)." (Arabic "laa darar wa laa diraar")

He SAWS (peace be upon him) also said:

"A person will not be able to move on the Day of Judgment until he is asked about ... his body as to what he engaged it in."

Smoking also goes against the saying of the Prophet SAWS:"Your body has a right on you."

secondly:

It was narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Allaah forbids you to trade gossip, to ask too many questions and to waste money.” And Allaah forbade wasteful extravagance when He said (interpretation of the meaning):

“and eat and drink but waste not by extravagance, certainly He (Allaah) likes not Al Musrifoon (those who waste by extravagance)." [al-A’raaf 7:31]

And He described the slaves of the Most Merciful as follows (interpretation of the meaning):

“And those who, when they spend, are neither extravagant nor niggardly, but hold a medium (way) between those (extremes)” [al-Furqaan 25:67]

The whole world now knows that the money spent on smoking is to be considered as money wasted, from which no benefit is gained; indeed, it is money spent on something harmful. If the money which is spent on smoking worldwide were to be collected, it could have saved entire populations who have died of starvation. Is there anyone more foolish that one who holds a dollar bill and sets fire to it? What is the difference between him and the one who smokes? Indeed, the smoker is more foolish, because the folly of the one who burns a dollar bill ends there, whilst the one who smokes burns his money and also harms his body.

The money that is spent on cigarettes is used on buying a harmful thing and is therefore an extravagance. Allah said (interpretation of the meaning):
"… and do not be extravagant wasters. Those who are extravagant are kinsmen of Satan." (Surat al-Israa' 17:26-27)

Extravagance (in Islam) means spending on something haraam.

Spending money on cigarettes is a waste of resources as well. The Prophet SAWS (peace be upon him) said:

"A person will not be able to move on the Day of Judgment until he is asked about ..... what he owned as to how he spent it."

Thirdly:

How many disasters have been caused by smoking, because of cigarette butts which are thrown away and cause fires. Other disasters have been caused in other ways, as when a house was burned down with its occupants inside, when a man lit his cigarette when there was a gas leak.

Fourthly:

How many people are offended by the smell of smokers, especially when you are unfortunate enough to have one of them standing next to you in the mosque. Probably any nasty smell is easier to bear than the smell of the smoker’s mouth when he has just woken up. It is amazing how many women can put up with the smell of their husbands’ mouths! The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade those who had eaten garlic or onions from coming to the mosque so that they would not offend their fellow-worshippers with their smell. The smell of onions and garlic is easier to bear than the smell of the smoker and his mouth.

Considering all that has been presented, it can be clearly seen that smoking is an evil among many others. It is not permissible to indulge in it, or buy and sell it, or even to offer it to others. It is incumbent on a person who is addicted to it that he must make all efforts and get whatever necessary treatment to stop it. If the unbelievers have understood the harm caused by smoking and made laws regarding it, the Muslims should be even more eager to stop it and treat those who are addicted to it.

We ask Allah the Almighty to cure everyone indulging in this evil and help him in giving it up. Allah is the Best Guide to the Right Path.
